Micro Teaching

Last ETM3 class,I did a reading micro teaching with Souya Watanabe. We did pre-reading and in-reading activities.Thank you for cooperating with my activities!!

☆The objectives of my pre-reading and in-reading activities.

・The main objective of our lesson is that the students can understand the difference of the way of order between Japanese restaurants and American Restaurants.
・The objective of pre-reading activities is that the students can interested in the way of order and we let students to know it.
・The objective of in-reading activities is that the students try to find the answer of the questions and understand whole meaning of sentences.
In the last of the class,we did true or false questions.Almost of all the students could answered all questions correctly,so I think that we could attain the objective.

☆The strengths and weaknesses of my mini-lesson.

◇The strengths
・The students could understand the gesture of the way of order, the theme correctly, and whole meaning of sentences.
・We were able to end in approximately 15 minutes.
◇The weakness
・We should have made more chance for the students to think, read, and speak.
・We should have done more in-reading activities.
・I think it is important to communicate between students.

☆Discoveries about teaching

When I watched the students in situation of teacher, I didn't know that how does the students feel. I originally think that the class should advance while a teacher watches the reaction of students. It is so important and difficult.

Thank you for reading until the end. Please give me a lot of opinion and advices!!!

Kanage,
I thought that your lesson was very well organized and that the pre-reading was very good at capturing the students’ interests. I thought the questions were also appropriate.
Here are some tips:
1) When you use English in class you should not read it from a piece of paper, it makes your English difficult to understand. Teachers have to be able to use English spontaneously.
2) JET (Kanage): You are a role model for the students so that means you should use English in class. If students see the Japanese teacher speak English, it will be an inspiration for them.

Kanage,
Thank you for your teaching. I enjoyed your class and learned many things from it. And your reflection on it was well-written. You know about strong and weak points of your lesson very well.
I liked your way of introducing the lesson. It would be interesting for students, even for the students who don't like English. They can enjoy the Tom's gesture and learn the differences between Japanese and American. And you made the topic clear in the begining of the lesson. It was really good.
But there are some weak points. As you wrote, you should have had more time to have students speak. Also, you should have spoken not only Japanese but also English, as Mr.Hall wrote. And don't read the paper and show students more smiles. It's very important. It can motivate them to study English, I think.
Anyway you did a good job. And I think it would be a good experience for you. Thank you.

Hi Kanako. This is Misato!
I enjoyed your class so much!
Firstly Tom-Soya's Kanchigai story was good! Also using gesture as pre-reading activity was good point too. I could feel fun of English class through this story and know difference of culture. So it is very good as introduction.
But as you write I think communication between teachers and students was a little. I think more communication could raise students motivation of studying English.
Thank you for your teaching!
Good job☆

Hello!
I think your way to use blackboard is very good. It' s easy for students to understand after they know the lesson' s theme. Soya' s introduction to this theme is also good and a lot of fun. Especially, "True or False" is easy way to grasp the story.
But you were little shy. Teachers should always active and cheerful. So, you will do better to teach in a loud voice. And as you wrote, you should communicate more with students. They are happy to speak to ALT!
Thank you for your teaching, and we should study more!

Hi, Kanage! This is Wakame. Thank you for your teaching. I really enjoyed your lesson, because your class had many gestures. Students like movement and it's good material to make students active.
And as you wrote, we could understand the context well, but we needed more reading practice.I think it sounds good for students to read the sentences with gestures. Anyway your class was fine! See you tomorrow!

I wanted you to act with more smile to us.Smile is very important because it make students feel very comfortable.

Hi!This is Nakki.Thank you for your teaching!
You and Soya practiced the teaching very hard.I think pre-reading was connected with the topic properly. So I think students could get interested in and image the topic easily.
As you wrote,it is difficult to know how students feel or think.I think teachers have to predict students'ieda and answer, and pay attention to them.
Good job☆

Hello, Kanage!This is Pizza.
I felt your questions, "How do people order in Japan/America?" helped us in understanding the contents.
If there were more time, it would better to take more time for students' reading and understanding meaning.
Thank you for your teaching!

Thank you for class.
Your class was compared the way of ordering Japanese and American was interesting. The teaching material of the blackboard helped us to understand the differences of a culture. And we learned about a its defferences at first, we could know the context in a textbook.
Your voice was easy to hear. It was a typical class, so I wanted more speaking.
